Jacksonville Police Death Benefit Fund - Bylaws
|

In
1924 The Jacksonville Police Death Benefit Fund was organized. May
5, 1924 the first official meeting was held. The following page
allows you to view the original minutes of that meeting. What can
be pieced together about the formation of the Fund is that individual
police officers had begun a discussion about forming such an organization
and that a newspaper article was written about that effort. The
manager of the Seminole Hotel, Chas B. Grinner, took interest in
that effort and offered business financial resources to that end.
The actual amount of dollars offered or subsequently given can't
be determined from surviving documents.
The
first recipient of monies from the Fund was Mrs. Eula J. Kelley
on September 3, 1924. She received a check for $445.00 upon the
death of her husband who was shot and killed in the line of duty
on September 1, 1924. He died on September 3, 1924 two days after
the shooting. Officer Kelley had only been a member of the Fund
since May 6, 1924 with a total contribution up to that time of only
$15.00. You can view on the F.O.P. web site some particulars about
the death of Officer Kelley. You can also inspect the attached minutes
from a November 7, 1924 Fund meeting in which some information is
reported about his death.
